Two Iconic Bob Fosse Numbers

On Nov. 14, we took a deep dive into the steamy, sequined world of Broadway dance king Bob Fosse, subject of the new Sam Wasson biographer, “Fosse.”

Among his notable recorded dances, we’ve selected two moments that really show the icon’s style and pizzazz in full form.

“Hey Big Spender” From 1969’s “Sweet Charity”

The low lights, sharp lines and big, brassy flair in this early number from Fosse’s filmed version of the 1966 Broadway musical he choreographed also reveal some of the director-choreographer’s obsession with death and personal failure.

“Snake In The Grass” from 1974’s “The Little Prince”

This iconic number — featuring Fosse himself as a rather creepy snake — is credited by many avid dance fans on the Internet as a direct precursor to pop great Michael Jackson’s career-making routines. We won’t pretend to be the judge of that, but we will say that there is a lot of Michael Jackson in this very Fosse sequence.
